What is Yoga Nidra?
Yoga Nidra is the name of a sleep-based guided meditation that gently brings you into a state of deep conscious sleep. The methods used to bring you into this state of deep stillness, silence and clarity include various body relaxation, breath awareness and visualization techniques. Together, these methods allow you to reprogram patterns and perspectives in your subconscious (habit mind) and eventually lead you to a letting go of any words, thoughts, emotions, images or impressions in the mind and settle into a state of deep rest and complete non-doing. With practice, Yoga Nidra reinforces your connection to your innermost self where self-healing can occur and you are just ‘being.'
What happens in Yoga Nidra?
To explain this we need to talk about the Koshas. Koshas were first mentioned in the Upanishad texts of India a few thousand years ago and describe us as each having five interrelated layers of individual being. When guided in Yoga Nidra, you are gently led from the most solid Kosha layer, your physical body to the subtlest layer, your bliss body. You transition from being an active participant in your body and mind to being the observer of body and mind. This is very stress releasing and brings about the realization that you are more than just the body-mind in life. In journeying to the subtlest of Koshas, you experience a complete letting go in which healing and transformation can more easily shine through.
